その独特な2重螺旋のスロープに沿って西国三十三観音像が安置され、お参りすることで三十三観音参りができるといわれてきた、会津のさざえ堂。その功徳に預かろうと、至る所におびただしい数の千社札が貼り付けてある。本来は、その神社仏閣の許可を得て御朱印をもらい貼り付けるのが本筋なのだが、どうだろう？ましてや、この建物は、国の重要文化財に指定されている。無許可で千社札を貼り付けることは器物損壊罪、建造物損壊罪に問われ、5年以下の懲役刑となる可能性も有るのだ。こんな私利私欲の証拠を見せられてしまうと、とても悲しい気持ちになる。こんなところに千社札を貼っている人間は、地獄に落ちる、と私は信じている。

よくもまあ、こんなところにこんなものを、という建物が会津柳津の崖に立っている。正式名は、福満虚空蔵菩薩圓藏寺というおめでたい名前なのだが、その立地から、上から見ても下から見ても絶景なのだ。いまは片門ダムのダム湖になっているので、水面は上がっているが、その昔は、もっと断崖絶壁だったのだろう。
実は、この只見川を含む阿賀野川水系には、治水、利水含めて38基ものダムや堰が存在する。日本の大河川のひとつではあるが、それにしてもよくも作ったものだ。戦後の電力供給のために国策で作られた奥只見ダムなど、自然と国土を大きくねじ曲げてしまったダムも多い。本当に、そのダムは必要だったのか、今では足かせになってはいないのか？。そろそろ、いや、早急にこのあたりを考え直す時期に来ているのではないだろうか？

夏の柳津は、みたま祭というくくりで、稚児行列と灯籠流し、そして花火大会がセットで行われる。中でも大きな赤べこと一緒に円蔵寺から街を練り歩く稚児行列には、自然と笑顔がこぼれてしまう。この子たちに幸多かれと願う。
しかし、この子たちの未来には、明るさが全く見えない。少子高齢化が進み、先進国では最下位に近い平均給与が上がる気配すら見えない。大学には入りやすいかも知れないが、サラ金よりひどい奨学金が待ち構えている。老後には、きっちり年金をもらえる補償すらない。もし老後に、大きな病気などをしてしまったら、公務員以外は、その時点で人生は終わりになってしまう。誰がこんな国にしたのだろうか？

一度は戊辰戦争で焼け野原になってしまった会津の街。150年経った今でも会津はなお、復興している、そんなことを思わせてくれる会津の街角。電柱は埋められて道路には石が敷かれ、昔ながらの造り酒屋が、モダンなそれでいてどこかレトロな建物になっている。
原発被害に遭った、同じ福島の町々はどうだろう。戊辰戦争との違いは、焼けたのではなくやっかいな放射能が降り注いだのだ。それなのに、国は、あとさき考えず除染を推し進めたり、世界基準から大きく逸脱した放射能数値でも、帰還困難区域の解除を行ったりしている。何を考えているのか？あげく、汚染水を海に垂れ流したり、汚染土壌を畑に鋤込んだりするらしい。狂っているとしか思えない。

会津若松の駅前には、C57形蒸気機関車の動輪が鎮座している。そのC57形蒸気機関車は、今、磐越西線で「ばんえつ物語号」として、現役で観光SLとしての役目を担っている。2001年の鶴ヶ城の修復に合わせて、駅舎もお城風に改装、瓦屋根の色が鶴ヶ城と一緒になった会津若松駅。如何せん、駅前のロータリーは、車優先で歩行者がないがしろになっているのが残念。
そんな会津若松駅は磐越西線で来ると、スイッチバックスタイルで、新津方面も郡山方面も同方向に列車が出て行く。逆方向に行くのは、只見線と会津鉄道線なのだが、その只見線も、阿賀川を渡り、街を右回りに会津盆地を半周してから、只見川沿いに只見方面に向かう。そのため、何度訪れても、方向感覚がずれてしまう。会津の街が今も昔も物流のハブ都市になっている、所以だ。

The Tadami Line also crosses the Aga River, turns around the town halfway around the Aizu Basin, and heads for Tadami along the Tadami River. Therefore, no matter how many times you visit, the sense of direction will shift. That is why the city of Aizu has always been a logistics hub city.
会津の象徴、鶴ヶ城は2010年に改修、赤瓦葺きになり現在の姿になった。しかし、戊申戦争後、損傷したお城は1873年まで天守をはじめすべて解体され、石垣だけになっていた。1890年には、旧会津藩士の一人が城地約29haを私費で買い取り、元藩主の松平家に寄付。今度はその松平家から、若松市に所有権が渡り、1965年に現在の鉄筋コンクリートのお城ができあがる。つまり、この鶴ヶ城は元藩士が守り、再建した城でもある。
会津白虎隊の悲しい物語とともに、どこまでも武士だった会津藩士が再建させた鶴ヶ城なのだ。

In 1890, one of the former Aizu feudal lords bought about 29 ha of castle land at private expense and donated it to the former lord, the Matsudaira family. This time, the ownership of the Matsudaira family passed to Wakamatsu City, and in 1965 the current reinforced concrete castle was completed. In other words, Tsuruga Castle is also a castle that was protected and rebuilt by a former feudal lord.
Along with the sad story of the Aizu Byakko-tai, it is Tsuruga Castle rebuilt by the Aizu feudal lord who was a warrior.
時代と情報を読み切れなかった会津藩主、松平容保（まつだいらかたもり）によって、戊辰戦争末期の会津戦争で街は焦土と化してしまう。折から発生した町屋の火事を会津落城と勘違いして、白虎隊は自刃、その誤認の景色を眺めたのもここ、飯盛山からだった。さらに当時、会津藩の多額の税金で苦しめられていた庶民が、新政府軍に協力したため、会津藩の終焉が早まったとする研究もある。
ともあれ、会津の街を焦土にしてしまう権利が新政府軍にあっただろうか？戦争にルールはないと言ってしまえばそれまでだが。
今の会津は、観光に力を入れて真実の歴史をねじ曲げて、勝った官軍に負けた、悲しい敗者の会津武家を演出しようとしている。一般庶民の生活はそこにはなく、リーダーとしての資格に欠けた藩主像もない。彼の身代わりになり、戦争責任を一身に負って切腹した会津藩のナンバー4、萱野長修の名前もこの景色の中に埋まってしまっている。

もともと、予備兵力である少年兵の白虎隊が、戦争に赴くには、藩の戦略ミスがあった。新政府軍の圧倒的戦力とその武器量を読み切れず、各方面に守備隊を分散して送ってしまっていたからだ。彼らは、この洞穴から出て目の当たりにする会津の街が、黒煙に煙る姿を見て何を思ったのだろうか？
これは、リーダーのひとつのミスで、大変なことになってしまうと教訓なのだろう。今のこの国の状況にも当てはまってしまう気がするが、無念の紫陽花は見たくないなあ。

この会津さざえ堂は寛政8年（1796年）に建立された六角三層のお堂で、正式名称は「円通三匝堂（えんつうさんそうどう）」。すごいのは、当時、専門外の僧侶が考案したらしいこと。2重螺旋のスロープに沿って西国三十三観音像が安置され、ここをお参りすることで三十三観音参りができるといわれてきた。上りと下りが全く別の通路になっている、一方通行のいわゆる木で作られた栄螺のようなものなのだ。考案したのもすごいが、これを言われて作っちゃう会津の職人さんも相当すごい。
個人的には、すべては自分に戻ってくる、みたいなことを示唆しているようにも思える。
え？それは今の政治家に言ってくれって？公文書を勝手に処分したり、ないと言い張ってみたり、言い訳にならない言い訳をしたり、論点をぼかしてはっきり答えなかったり。都合の悪いことは、政治的圧力や権力で、全部もみ消してしまう。うーん、それらは、やがて自分に返っていくのかも知れない。
This Aizu Sazae-do is a three-story hexagonal hall built in 1796, and its official name is Entsuu Sansodo. What is amazing is that a non-professional monk invented it at the time.
